Nature and Scope

Module one of Caribbean Newspapers from the Twentieth Century is a database of historic microfilmed newspapers from the Latin American and Caribbean Collection held at the George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida. The collection includes a variety of English, Spanish, French, and Dutch language newspapers published and distributed in the Caribbean. The digitised microfilm newspapers enable interdisciplinary research in Caribbean history, culture, and social science. The database includes newspapers from 1924-1952 from across the region. A mix of perspectives are featured in the resource, providing opportunities to explore decolonial histories and underrepresented voices by critically reading newspapers from across the Caribbean and understanding the daily lives of those who called the Caribbean home.

AM will be publishing additional modules of Caribbean Newspapers from the Twentieth Century in the future. New modules may extend chronological and geographic coverage through the inclusion of new newspaper titles and further editions of existing titles.

For further information on the material selected for inclusion in Caribbean Newspapers from the Twentieth Century, please read the Selection Criteria and Guide to the Archival Collections

The nature of digitising microfilmed newspapers means you may encounter digital images with imperfections, and this can impact transcription quality and search results. To find out more about discovering documents relevant to your research, please read the Searching Guide.
