Selection Criteria

The material included in Caribbean Newspapers from the Twentieth Century has been selected in close collaboration with academic subject experts on Caribbean history and Caribbean newspaper publishing, collections specialists at the participating library, and under the guidance of the Editorial Board.

The selection of newspapers included in Caribbean Newspapers from the Twentieth Century was driven by some key aims:

  • To bring together a wide range of well-known and small press historic newspapers published during the twentieth century that reveal aspects of daily life, Caribbean history and culture, decolonial histories, and Caribbean society and politics.
  • To support this rich content with robust supplementary research and teaching tools that both acknowledge and contextualise the newspaper titles and the wider newspaper publishing landscape in the Caribbean, as well as the impact these newspapers had on Caribbean life and society.
  • To include a variety of newspapers from across the English, French, Spanish, and Dutch speaking Caribbean, enabling research across different regions, languages, and perspectives.
  • To provide greater access to historical newspapers at risk of deterioration due to the ephemeral nature and physicality of printed newspapers preserved on microfilm.

The newspapers in this resource are interdisciplinary by their very nature and can be used to conduct research across subject areas such as, but not limited to, Caribbean history, colonialism, culture, social sciences, environmental history, war and conflict, and advertising culture.

A note on exclusions

  • Newspaper titles falling outside the defined remit of this resource.
